Defining Intelligence

Before we can compare AI and human intelligence, we must first define what intelligence is. Psychologists have settled on a definition that includes the ability to derive information, learn from experience, adapt to the environment, understand and correctly utilize thought and reason. While this definition may seem wordy, it captures the essence of what it means to be intelligent.

The Capabilities of AI

AI has come a long way in just a few short years. The latest iteration of the GPT language model, GPT-4, is capable of passing the bar exam and qualifying for a U.S. medical license. These improvements are a result of better models trained with high-quality data, fine-tuned with a human touch, and run on exponentially better computing power.

However, the quality of the data used to train AI models is a cause for concern. Much of the data used may be stolen, and the computing power required to run these models can use up valuable resources like drinking water. Despite these concerns, the potential profits of AI development, estimated at 4.4 trillion dollars, make it unlikely that development will slow down or refocus to clean up the mess we've already made.

Testing AI and Human Intelligence

To determine whether AI is more intelligent than humans, we need to test both. In a battery of tests designed to figure out who is smarter, or if we're even smart at all, we challenged an AI to tests designed to measure adaptability, deriving information, understanding, and correctly utilizing thought and reason.

The results were surprising. While the AI performed exceptionally well on tests that relied on recalling background information and knowledge, it struggled on tests that were purposefully made to ask novel questions. This inconsistency in AI intelligence is due to the long tail problem.

The Long Tail Problem

The long tail problem is a result of AI being evaluated using benchmarks, standardized tests that focus on a specific task. While it would be nice if AI could also generalize out of that task or learn a new skill from only a few examples, it isn't necessary for success. As a result, AI development has been lopsided, favoring skills that benchmarks value and neglecting the ones they don't.

This lopsidedness has led to a gap in AI intelligence that is non-trivial. AI is both more intelligent than humans and less intelligent, depending on the task at hand. While AI has some valuable and specific applications, where it fails is a good reminder that AI still has a long way to go before it can truly out-think us.

The Future of AI

As we are running out of data, researchers are starting to focus on improving predictability and performance for models with fewer resources. The ARC challenge is offering a massive prize pod for AI that do well on the ARC benchmark. These efforts are a step in the right direction, but AI still has a long way to go before it can surpass human intelligence.

Pros and Cons of AI

Pros:

- AI can perform tasks that are too dangerous or difficult for humans.

- AI can process vast amounts of data quickly and accurately.

- AI can improve efficiency and productivity in various industries.

Cons:

- AI can be biased and perpetuate existing inequalities.

- AI can be used for malicious purposes, such as cyber attacks or deepfakes.

- AI can replace human jobs and lead to unemployment.

Highlights

- AI has come a long way in just a few short years, but the quality of the data used to train AI models is a cause for concern.
