I recently moved to an apartment in the city. I know that you can't expect complete silence in apartment life, however, one of my neighbors has a very loud voice and I could hear him talking through my bedroom wall. For some reason this really bothered me - I'd be trying to fall asleep and I'd be able to hear this guy talking almost as if he were in the room. I picked up this white noise generator and put it on my nightstand near his wall. I literally haven't heard him since. I'm able to sleep all night without interruption and am generally a happier person because of this product.
 First of all this white noise machine is okay at first. In my opinion way too many buttons. When it’s dark It’s hard to find the right button and you’re clicking all the buttons and it’s switching to music and all this other stuff. Second, there is this really creepy music that’s repetitive that you will hear every once in a while playing in the background of the white noise. Both me and my husband on separate occasions were hearing it so we finally threw it away. I first thought it was just me, but after hearing it like three times and then my husband heard it once we were like what the heck! The music is extremely annoying because it repeats over and over and over and over again the same sound it will drive you crazy! The only reason we heard it is because we had it on at night in the bed with the baby. I have no idea why they would put creepy repetitive music in the background, and what the purpose of that would be. In my opinion it can’t be good.

I tried out a bunch of these machines, and this was the only one that the sound quality didn't bother me by sounding too tinny. I bought this to cover the sound of snoring coming through my wall, but unfortunately using a noise machine just doesn't work for me and I can't fall asleep because I feel like I'm actively listening to distinct noises. That's just me personally, and if you CAN use a noise machine, I recommend this one over all the other ones I tried.

I certainly can’t listen to the half dozen water/rain/waves sounds without waking up to pee… but the white noise, and fan settings work great for me. I did leave a pine scented candle burning while listening to a crackling fire and work up in a gawd awful panic. I’m currently enjoying the train sound (no toot toot, just the steady sound of the wheels going round and round). I’d have given 5 stars but I don’t like having to cycle though 39 sounds to change the setting.

I expected more soothing sound options. None of them sound like a fan or anything remotely soothing. They all sound like static. I was shocked since it gets such good reviews everywhere I look, I even wonder if mine is defective. Sadly, it also can't be returned.
Do you remember Sharper Image stores back in the '70's? One of their first gadgets that became a must-have in every home was the Sound Soother which crested background noise and various surf, rain and other sounds to relax you and help you sleep. Back then that was the ultimate in high technology and yes I had one at one point in my life. They worked great with one exception- the sound would play for a while then suddenly you would hear the sound loop start over. So rather than relaxing you, you would lay in your bed in the dark waiting for that inevitable moment when the loop hiccupped to the point that you could predict it down to the second. RETURN OF A CLASSIC Fast forward to this product, which has a similar look and function and even costs about the same. Here it is 50 years later and it does almost exactly the same thing, with one notable exception. This time around it doesn't loop, and that is the winner difference. HOW DOES IT SOUND You can't evaluate the quality of the noise masker sounds because by definition they sound like what they are - white noise, pink noise, etc. But you can evaluate the digital sound effects like rain, surf, and the others and they are very good indeed. Although small, the speaker is has a full tonal range and more than enough volume and each of the sound effects is lifelike. HELPFUL HINTS To get the maximum realism it is important to follow a couple of simple rules. One is don't place the sound machine on your nightstand, you will quickly get annoyed by the proximity of the speaker to your ear. Instead place it high on a shelf somewhere at the foot of your bed so both ears hear it equally in the distance. Sounds like rain will be more convincing to your brain if you place the sound machine near a window where you would normally hear rain sounds, and conversely sounds like surf are more realistic if you place it low, like a surf line because it can get a little unnerving to hear the ocean over your head. And play around with the volume. There is a "right" volume for each type of sound, for example a gentle rain is more relaxing than a deluge. A NOTE ON WHAT IS SOOTHING I’ve noted some confusion on why some of the sound effects exist, after all a ticking clock, a crowing rooster or happy birds chirping isn’t relaxing, right? If we go back to the earliest days of sound soothers their intent was never to always be relaxing. Many times you want just the opposite, to be put in a cheerful state of mind in the morning, or to stay awake while waiting for something. That’s why there is such a variety in the 40 sound effects they include. IS IT WORTH IT Kudos to this company for bringing back a classic. Not only is it fun but it has a serious benefit in masking every day noises to help you sleep better.

I used this very occasionally and it seems to be poorly manufactured. The buttons weren't always responsive and it completely stopped working after about 4 months. I used it less than 20 times. The warranty was only for 90 days.
