Bought the blue for a replacement backup drive. It would not detect on an older sata I PC, or the capacity of the drive may have been tooo high for the old bios. (same problem with a Red drive i purchased as well) I was really flustered, I was going to return it. It was seen on a mac, and even a pi could detect it.. in the end the workaround was to mount the drive via USB, it then showed up, and showed capacity. Praise USB (even if it was 2.0)

I have always worried about the amount of noise the drive made. Mostly sounding like the heads were being moved in and out in a way that didn't sound normal. Until now the drive has performed fairly well for its 5400 RPM drive speed. Last night while moving some file to a disk on this drive, the file explorer window just closed, and then the file copy window closed. For about 10 - 15 seconds the drive wasn't available. You couldn't do anything with the disk. It was as if it was a ghost disk. Then the disk would be back like nothing had happened. This also happened if your played a video file from this disk. The video plays just fine for 30 to 60 seconds, then Windows Media Player just closes with a message saying the video can't be played. If an explorer windows is open, it closes too! Most recently when I tried to boot the system up, it took much longer for it to boot. Everything seemed to be working in slow motion. Then little by little thing stopped responding. The disk activity light was on solid. I forced shut it down and disconnected the drive. When I booted the system it ran normally. Apparently the drive died this morning. No Smart warnings at all. The drive electronics are no good, but the files are still probably fine on the platters.

I have always used WD for my PCs. This is the first time a drive (actualy 4 of them) totaly fails on any of my systems. No data recovered, and drives are dead witn only 3 months of use. I have tried everything to at least make them work but nothing as worked out. So disappointed and so much spent.

WD has been recently been recently jipping customers by converting it's popular Red and Blue line of consumer hard drives from CMR to SMR. Basically this meas they're able to shoehorn more storage into the same drive with less material and at a cost of performance and in some cases compatibility (mostly for WD Red "NAS" labeled drives). They have done this to reduces cost for them and have NOT been transparent about the change to the customer and the possible repercussions, nor have they relayed the cost savings to the customer. I've ALWAYS preferred WD drives to any other brands, but this action has changed that for me and I will cease to support WD in favor of other brands. I myself was duped by this and noticed the performance of a new WD Blue 6 TB drive to be worse than it's 2GB predecessor in my system. I'm just glad I found out before I spend 1000 bucks on NAS drives. That money will now go to a competitor. Do yourself a favor and research DEEPLY before purchasing a drive from ANY vendor and make sure you are NOT getting SMR drives.
I just picked up my second one of these. I don't use them as boot drives so I expect them to last longer than I will need them to. True to the specs and a peppy feeling drive for 5400 rpm. They do their job well, I've had lotsa different brands of drives over the years and WD is my favorite HDD manufacturer.
I tried formatting 6 times with different types of connections: 2 AC adapters x 2 drive bays with XFS, + 1 time with SATA, + 1 time with ext4. SMR is known to be bad for long writes since it duplicates work internally. It is known to be faulty for XFS I found out, so I tried ext4. Even then, formatting failed after over an hour. Something like this happens every time: #mkfs.xfs: mkfs.xfs: libxfs_device_zero write failed: Input/output error #mkfs.ext4: Allocating group tables: done Writing inode tables: done Creating journal (262144 blocks): done Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: mkfs.ext4: Input/output error while writing out and closing file system It is just past the return window, so I'm screwed.
