The AI trends in 2024

2023 was undoubtedly the year when AI entered the collective consciousness, but I believe it was just a warm-up for what is coming in 2024. That's why today I have gathered all the most important trends that have been brewing throughout this year and are ready to take off in 2024. I have organized this by starting with the most obvious ones and moving towards the more speculative ones, so the longer you stay, the more unexpected some of them will be. So here are all the trends you should keep an eye on throughout 2024, starting with the big language models like GPT-4.

The big language models

Before you say it's obvious, the big language models made their appearance in 2023 and will continue to evolve. That's true, but there are certain aspects we should discuss because most people don't realize the extent of the development that has taken place. If you talk to people on the street, they haven't experienced GPT-4 and are therefore unaware of things like GPT Vision or 128k token context windows that are available. We won't spend too much time on this, but it's important. I want to highlight a video on Twitter where Ashutosh recreated the Google Gemini demo with GPT-4. This shows that if you know what you're doing, you can create things like the demo yourself.

Changes in social media

Most people have seen these trends as AI influencers or deepfakes. We had many viral moments on social media throughout 2023, but we can only expect it to increase in 2024. AI-generated voices are already almost indistinguishable from human voices. AI-generated videos are still in development, but there will be a new system to label videos that contain AI-generated materials. However, the images are already good enough that you can't even tell the difference. This raises questions about verifying digital identity because at some point, you'll have to prove that you created that content.

AI assistants

The rise of AI assistants is a trend that is not even controversial. Most people would love to have an omnipotent AI assistant like Jarvis that makes their lives easier. We have already seen demos, but I think we will see an upgrade of all these assistants in 2024. Meta's AI glasses have received rave reviews because the camera quality is really good, and they are multimodal. Humanoid robots are also in development, but we'll have to wait another two years before they start entering the mainstream.

AI girlfriends

AI girlfriends are a trend that might surprise many. In a society where social skills are declining, AI could be a tool to help people regain some of their social skills. Websites like Character AI received 478 million visits in November alone, showing that people are lonely and want to talk to someone. Video games could also integrate AI to generate content procedurally, creating a personalized environment for each player.

Integration of AI in video games

Video games have become the biggest entertainment category on Earth, and there are countless uses for AI in this field. Big language models could be used to create non-player characters that are connected to AI and can see you play. Video games could also use AI to generate content procedurally, thus creating a personalized environment for each player.

Conclusion

These trends are just some of the many ways AI will change our lives in 2024. We could see the integration of all these trends into one, creating a future where AIs are ubiquitous and personalized for each individual. Of course, there will be challenges to overcome, but I am confident that AI can be used to improve our lives in many ways.
